I find rural scenes like this one so restful. This will be in my upcoming show! Many artists are drawn to painting hay bales. The most famous paintings of this subject is the haystacks series by Monet.

"O beautiful for spacious skies. For amber waves of grain. . . . " The opening lyrics of "America the Beautiful" written as a poem by Katharine A. Bates (more information ). I loved the peacefulness of this scene, it's simple beauty, and it's orange and blue harmonious color scheme! This one will be in my show, which begins October 1.

All the variations of green and textures of the low growing vegetation made this simple landscape fun to paint. This will be in my solo show, which begins October 1st!

Lupine plants (Lupinus) are perennials that come in a wide variety of colors. They attract butterflies and hummingbirds. If I had a green thumb I'd grow them myself! I did a quick read on them here: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Lupinus , and found out that the seeds are commonly used in culinary dishes in the Mediterranean countries. They have a full range of essential amino acids and are a good alternative to soy. Very interesting. I just thought they were a pretty flower!

On a recent drive through upper New York state I passed by a peaceful hay field. The soft puffy clouds, sunlit grasses, mature trees, and neatly rolled hay bales scattered across the field gave me a feeling of restfulness and calm. Something I needed during my 13 hour road trip!

DETROIT, August 5, 2011 – The Detroit Artists Market is proud to present the DAM Small(er) Show opening Friday, August 5th, 2011 and running through August 27th. Detroit art collectors both experienced and new will not want to miss this LARGE selection of SMALL art works by more than 100 talented Detroit area artists. All pieces for this cash-and-carry show are limited in size to 8” by 8”, and all work is priced at $250 or less. It was a hot one today in Michigan! Up in the 90's. I was cool and comfy painting in my studio finishing up this new landscape depicting an untouched field and color-filled sky on a warm evening. I see a lot of views like this one, not always as colorful, along side the highways during my drives through Michigan and Canada. I snap photographs along the way for future reference. Sometimes I paint them just as I see them in the photos, but most times I make adjustments to color, value, tree placement, and even swap out skies between photos -- whatever it takes to reach my feel for the piece.

The month of April brings us our annual local artist exhibit. We are excited to welcome many new artists to the gallery this year. Lotus Arts is committed to providing a venue for the talented artists in the Greater Detroit area, and this exhibit will showcase the work of some of Michigan’s emerging artists. Designed to feature local artistic endeavors, this exhibition encourages public dialogue, understanding, and enjoyment of visual arts.

The exhibit is an all-media exhibit, with artwork in both 2-dimensional forms as well as three dimensional forms. Everything including contemporary glass, watercolor paintings, oil paintings, pen and ink, photography, lithography, and experimental media will be on display. Exhibiting artists include: Namrata Bajaj, Richard Emrich, Kim Ensch, Patrice Erickson, Patricia Izzo, Vic Leo, Nancy Paton, Rose Paulus, Ron Rolling, Wendy Soots, and Priyank Vora.

The Passing of a Great Art Teacher

Thomas Nuzum, Michigan artist and teacher, has passed away this week. I am deeply saddened to hear this news today. Tom was my favorite and best art instructor. I studied with him for 2 years (1999 - 2000) and to this day hear his words of wisdom in my head while I paint. He and his art will live on in my heart and mind.

Big red clouds hanging low over the flat earth and blocking the brilliant setting sun. I watched the sky that evening for over an hour. The changing colors were glorious. Nature provides me with endless inspiration.

Another painting of the dunes at Saugatuck, Michigan. This time I used two canvas panels to create a diptych. I liked how the clouds were sweeping across the dunes, so I went low with the horizon line and very wide to emphasize the sweeping motion.

This landscape depicts a portion of the dunes at Oval Beach in Saugatuck, Michigan. My husband and I went there to celebrate our wedding anniversary this past October. We had a great time exploring the coastline of Lake Michigan, shopping at unique boutiques, gallery hopping, and eating very well at some very nice restaurants. This earlier post shows the beginning stages of this painting.

Halfway There

I'm working on a oil landscape inspired by a recent trip to Saugatuck, MI. It's a 40 x 30 inch stretched canvas. Here you see the completed underpainting, which was done in monochromatic mixes of gray-green (verdaccio) for the land and a gray-blue for the sky. With the drawing, composition, and values pretty much established here, my next step will be the overpainting with local color layers.

Working from the top down I'm establishing the cloud patterns in more detail here.

Began painting by blocking in where the sky is and leaving the clouds and land alone for now.

I started with a loose charcoal drawing. You can see traces of a few grid lines to help keep me on track. I'm working from my digital image on my computer monitor.

Meadow Brook Hall and Oakland University are just down the road from me. I often go there to take reference photographs of the evening sky, because there are some fairly good elevation locations with nearly unobstructed views. Outdoor concerts, gardens, a mansion, a golf course; and a public university offering baccalaureate, master's, and doctoral degrees, as well as a theater and art gallery; are all there. This is all possible because of the generosity of the late Alfred and Matilda Dodge Wilson.

Weekend Inspiration

I'm just back from a weekend in Saugatuck, Michigan. I had a great time visiting galleries, shopping, and eating. I took hundreds of photographs that will definately inspire future paintings. That seagull is the first to ever actually turn and pose for me. That sunset is over Lake Michigan at Oval Beach. It was a bit chilly and windy, but oh, so inspiring.

I finished this oil landscape today. Evening Peace is based on an old photograph and my memory from of a moment about two decades ago. My husband and I were moving from Connecticut to Texas. We drove in an overloaded Grand Am. I cannot imagine doing this drive now. Anyway, just as we crossed the boarder of Arkansas into Texas I snapped a photograph with a cheap Kodak Instamatic 110 traveling at 65 m.p.h.. Way back when I enlarged the photo print to about 12 x 16 inches. Working from the picture alone was difficult. The foreground was nearly all black, so I used my artistic license and memory to paint this version of that moment. The timing for painting this is right on as we celebrate our 20th wedding anniversary in a couple of weeks!

I just received word yesterday that I was accepted by the Henry Ford Health System Healing Arts Program to exhibit my oil landscape paintings next year. The exhibit will run from March 3 - April 29. The works to be displayed will by my pastoral landscapes like the one shown above. I think they will fit in well with the goal of the Healing Arts program : ". . . to promote healing by reducing stress and promoting a relaxing environment that replaces anxiety with hope for all of our patients, families and staff." I'll provide details later on.

Plein Air along the Paint Creek Trail

This morning I did some plein air painting along the Paint Creek Trail in Rochester, Michigan, the state's first rail-to-trail running 8.9 miles. I set up along the side so as not to block the joggers, walkers, and bikers going by. It was windy so I didn't use an easel for fear of it getting blown over. In this shot is the view at the Woodward crossing. I'll have another painting of the trail in a ways from the Tienken crossing. Both paintings will be exhibited at the Firebrick Gallery and Pottery Studio's Plein Air Art reception this Saturday, September 11th beginning at 6pm.
